Samara
For someone who loves math, I don’t add up.
I’m a cool nerd. A feminine tomboy.
Tough but fragile. Wild and domestic.
Good mother but bad girl.
Educated but still a project girl.
An urbanite stuck in the suburbs.
I am the sum of everything that’s happened to me,
and the evolution past ALL of it.
Mysterious and cosmic forces, forces greater than we can understand, conspired to bring together this group of extraordinary women.
I adore them.
We laugh every day. Sometimes through tears.
Sisterwives
All my life, I’ve looked for a place where I could fit in.
Where I could be exactly who I am, and not be judged for it.
Sisterwives
We’ve suffered and fought; been broken, but never defeated.
We acknowledge the pain, and then move forward – to the silver linings.
Sisterwives.
I want you to come here and play with us.
Be brave with us.
Be inappropriate, rebellious, reckless, or sad. Rejoice, if that’s where your heart takes you.
Allow us to support you as you explore life’s messy beautiful.
Don’t be afraid to lean into your darkest midnight black.
Yes. It can be brutal.
But it beats the hell out of bland Gap khaki beige, every time.
So, WRITE FREE.
Sisterwives.
Alone we are enough, but together we are stronger.
WELCOME HOME
Now that is a beautiful profile photo.

Have I told you lately that I love you? Probably.
But it bears repeating.

Don!
You’ve been there since the very beginning, do you know that? Since the day Jennie and I fell in blog love.
It’s only fitting that you be here now, as well.

I have to agree with Jennie. Your picture, your hair…I love it! Don’t get me started on your word, because…perfect.

Ps.: I was surrounded by lots of baking supplies today. Didn’t buy any as I had to go to lots of other places and didn’t want to carry a bag, but I had to think of you. ^_^

Oh! In my fantasy, I’m visiting you in Europe, and we’re baking together.
After you’ve taught me to draw on the purrrrfect cat eye!

I’m still amused that Bradley (Green Embers) was surprised that his post about math was getting attention from you, but, y’know, I read it and thought, “Oh, Samara is going to LOVE this!” (Oh, and just you wait, Bradley was the one that told me about Code Academy… I will see yet about getting you to make the jump to computer science…)
I’m still talking about that post with friends. I’m still shocked that kids aren’t memorizing their multiplication tables and that they aren’t learning to count change by the method he described. Oy vey. My father and father-in-law majored in chemistry, minored in mathematics and electronics, respectively. BOTH of them have taught me numerous times why both skills are necessary.

I quiz my kid in math regularly. He hates it.
But I still do it.
Because he should understand math. And because math is awesome!

Yep. I think mathematics IS awesome; it’s just so many people have had really bad schooling in it. I had some horrible teachers and I’m still unraveling that. (I loved geometry, hated trig, algebra was… eh. Had no instruction in calculus.)
What’s your thoughts on Danica McKellar’s books on mathematics? Personally, I’m not really jazzed on her girly-girl approach to it, which I think my daughter (and probably Cimmorene, too) would find off-putting.

I’m not familiar with those books. Are they textbooks?
Calculus. Intense stuff. It’s the mathematical study of change. its developed through Infinitesimals; very small numbers. I’m not a fan, although its necessary for the study of all physical sciences. I always preferred other branches of mathematics.

No, they’re not textbooks, I don’t think… at least not in the way schools would consider books textbooks. Two of the books have their own websites:

I would be interested to know your take on them.

I love math too! I’m not great at it, but i find it fascinating. High school Geometry when equations explained why things were what they were?? Mind blown! Lol, anyway, you should know that I think you’re amazing already, but in case you don’t, “Samara, I think you’re amazing.” Keep on being you!
